Google Preferred Sources for Dealerships: The Complete 2026 Setup Guide

Google's official Preferred Sources deeplink format is now published. Here's the exact setup — eligible domains, the deeplink URL, official badge assets, every customer touchpoint to deploy, and how to measure adoption without a direct metric.

What Preferred Sources actually does (and what it does not)

On May 27, 2026, Google expanded Preferred Sources into AI Mode and AI Overviews globally. The feature is simple: a signed-in Google user can go to google.com/preferences/source, search for any website, and pin it. Once pinned, that site's content appears with a "preferred" badge in Top Stories, AI Mode answers, and AI Overviews — weighted more prominently than it would be for non-preferring users.

This is not a paid placement. Google has confirmed it explicitly: Preferred Sources is entirely user-controlled and there is no advertising product associated with it. The only way your dealership gets pinned is if a human being who has been to your store decides to add you.

That constraint is the entire strategy. You do not optimize for Google to add you. You convert your existing customers — people who already trust you — into Preferred Sources adopters. Done consistently, this creates a structural moat: every one of your service customers who pins you carries your store's content-weighting into their next vehicle search, whenever that happens to be.

Who is eligible and how the deeplink works

Google's official documentation specifies that only domain-level and subdomain-level sites are eligible for Preferred Sources. Your root domain (yourdealership.com) and subdomain (inventory.yourdealership.com) qualify. A subdirectory like yourdealership.com/used-cars does not qualify on its own.

To check whether your domain is already in Google's source preferences tool, go to:

Search for your domain name in the tool. If it appears in the results, you are eligible and can begin promoting adoption immediately. If it does not appear yet, it typically becomes available within 30 days of having consistent, indexed content on the domain.

The deeplink format — now officially published by Google in their Search Central documentation — takes users directly to your site's entry in the preferences tool:

Substitute your actual domain. This URL, not a generic link to google.com/preferences/source, is what you embed in every customer touchpoint. It opens the tool with your store pre-filled and requires the user only to tap the pin button. Every extra click you eliminate improves conversion rate.

Google also provides official badge assets — an "Add as a Preferred Source on Google" button — available for download from Google's Search Central documentation page. Use the official badge. It has higher recognition than a text link and Google's documentation explicitly endorses it for use alongside your social media icons and newsletter signup.

Step 1: Verify your Google Business Profile is complete

Preferred Sources eligibility is connected to your Google entity footprint. Before promoting adoption, audit:

    • NAP (name, address, phone) is identical across your GBP, your website footer, and all major listing sites — Cars.com, Edmunds, Autotrader, Yelp. Any mismatch weakens entity recognition.
    • Business hours including holiday schedule are current.
    • All service categories are selected: New Car Dealer, Used Car Dealer, and Auto Repair Shop if applicable.
    • Photos updated within the last 90 days.
    • You are actively answering Q&A questions within 48 hours.
    • Review velocity: aim for 4+ new reviews per month with a 4.5+ average. Review volume directly affects how prominently Google surfaces your GBP when users search for you in the preferences tool.

An incomplete GBP means buyers who search for your dealership in the preferences tool may not find you easily, or Google's confidence in your entity match may be too low to surface the preferred badge reliably.

Step 2: Create your /preferred-source page

Build a dedicated page at yourdealership.com/preferred-source that does three things:

    1. Explains what Preferred Sources are in two short paragraphs — most buyers do not know this feature exists.
    2. Shows a screenshot of the preferences interface with your store highlighted (screenshot it yourself after pinning your own store).
    3. Contains a large, mobile-friendly button that deeplinks to `https://google.com/preferences/source?q=yourdealership.com`.

Add HowTo schema to this page with four steps: "Open Google Search," "Visit google.com/preferences/source," "Search for [Your Dealership Name]," "Tap Add as Preferred Source." HowTo schema on the page itself increases the probability that Google cites your page in AI Overviews when someone asks how to add a preferred source on Google — a question increasingly common as the feature gains awareness.

This page should load in under 2 seconds, be fully indexed, and be linked from your homepage footer and contact page.

Step 3: Embed the deeplink across every customer touchpoint

The conversion happens at the moment of maximum goodwill — right after a positive experience. Map every post-interaction touchpoint and embed the deeplink at each:

    Service department (your highest-frequency touchpoint):

    • Service invoice email footer: "Love your service experience? Add us as a Google Preferred Source so you always find us first."
    • Service receipt printout: QR code linking to your /preferred-source page.
    • Text message follow-up 2 hours after pickup: one-line ask with the deeplink.
    • Countertop tent card at service cashier: QR code + 10-word explanation.

    Sales department:

    • Delivery paperwork packet: one-page insert explaining Preferred Sources with the deeplink.
    • Post-delivery email sequence day 3: the ask lands better after the honeymoon feeling, not immediately at delivery.
    • Sales follow-up SMS at day 7: "Quick question — did you add us as a Google Preferred Source? Here's how."

    Digital:

    • Homepage banner for 60 days during launch: rotating hero or sticky bar.
    • Email newsletter footer (permanent).
    • Google Business Profile description: include the deeplink URL so users who find your GBP can add you directly.

Aim for one touchpoint per customer interaction. You are not spamming; you are explaining a free feature that makes their own search experience better.

Step 4: Train your service advisors and BDC

A 10-second verbal mention at service checkout converts a meaningful percentage of satisfied customers. Script:

*"One quick thing — if you Google us and tap 'Add as Preferred Source,' you'll see our specials and inventory first next time you're looking for a car. The receipt has a QR code, takes 30 seconds."*

This works because it is framed as a benefit to the customer, not a favor to the dealership. Train every service advisor, every BDC rep, and every delivery specialist to give this line. Print a laminated reminder card at each service desk.

Step 5: Measure what you can

Google does not yet expose a Preferred Sources adoption count — you cannot see how many users have pinned you. Measure these proxies instead:

    • Traffic to /preferred-source in GA4. Set up an event for page visits and button clicks.
    • QR code scans per touchpoint using UTM-tagged URLs (e.g., `?utm_source=service-invoice&utm_medium=qr`). This tells you which touchpoint converts best.
    • Branded search impressions in Search Console. Users who have pinned you search your name more frequently. A rising query volume for your dealership name is a proxy signal for growing Preferred Source adoption.
    • AI Mode citation rate for branded queries. Run "best [brand] dealer [city]" weekly in Google AI Mode. Stores with a large Preferred Sources base see themselves surfaced with the preferred badge even for informational queries.

What you need to surface once pinned

Being pinned is only valuable if Google has fresh, high-quality content to surface from you. A pinned store with template VDP descriptions and stale blog posts will surface stale content — and a preferred badge on mediocre content does not drive clicks.

    Make sure you have:

    • AI-optimized VDP descriptions across your full inventory — the primary content layer Google surfaces for in-market buyers.
    • Model landing pages for every brand you carry, updated monthly.
    • Buying guides for your top 5 models — the content that earns AI Overview citations during the research phase.
    • A Google Merchant Center Vehicle Listings feed that updates daily with current pricing and availability.

The preferred badge tells the buyer to pay attention to your result. The content has to justify that attention. Both layers together — Preferred Source adoption by your existing customers plus unique, AI-ready content on every VDP — create a compounding visibility advantage through the full 2026-2027 trade cycle.
